Dextromethorphan exerts a central antitussive effect by inhibiting the medulla oblongata cough center. Dextromethorphan is well absorbed when taken orally, takes effect within 15 to 30 minutes, and the effect can be maintained for 3 to 6 hours. The concentration of the prototype drug in plasma is very low. Its main active metabolite, 3-methoxymorphane, is present in high plasma concentrations. It is mainly used for dry cough, for colds, acute or chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, pharyngitis, tuberculosis and other upper respiratory tract infections.
